Saint-Germain-des-Prés is not just another neighborhood on the list. It’s an urban legend that casts a spell on everyone who visits. This is the classic, beating heart of the city, a place where art meets history and every lane or picturesque street corner looks like a scene from a romantic movie. The atmosphere here is magical and one of a kind, and maybe the only thing that compares is the thrill of seeing the Eiffel Tower at night, sparkling with lights as darkness falls over the city.
The goal of this page is to give you the most important information about this enchanting neighborhood: recommended hotels and apartments, walking routes that will help you discover all its attractions, and some history that will make your trip that much richer.
So let’s set off and discover the secrets of Saint-Germain.
Where to stay? My recommended hotels
Saint-Germain is one of the most sought-after areas in Paris (and rightly so!), which means you need to know where to look to get good value for your money. I gathered the places where the stay is an experience in itself:
My personal pick
Which place to stay suits you?
One short question, and I will pick out of the places I already checked and wrote about on the site the ones that fit the trip you are planning.
One moment, I am going over my recommendations to find what fits you…

Don’t worry, there are plenty more great options in this lovely neighborhood.
Feel at home: recommended apartments for families and couples
If you’re like me and love buying cheese and wine and sitting out on a balcony, or if you’re traveling with the family, an apartment is the perfect solution:
-

Citadines Saint-Germain
An apartment hotel on the banks of the Seine, facing Notre-Dame. A winning combination of comfort (a kitchenette) and a historic location.
-

Residence Le Prince Régent
A real treat: spacious luxury apartments with an on-site spa, near the Sorbonne. The good life.
-

Assas-Vavin Appartements
A cozy, practical studio near the Jardin du Luxembourg. A great base for couples who want some quiet.

More apartments?
I have more excellent apartment recommendations in the 6th arrondissement.
Everything you wanted to know (FAQ)
Before you pack your suitcase, here are the answers to the questions you ask me most:
Where exactly is Saint-Germain-des-Prés?
We’re talking about the heart of the Left Bank (the 6th arrondissement). Picture a square bordered by the Seine to the north, Boulevard du Montparnasse to the south and Boulevard Saint-Michel to the east. This is the classic center of Paris.
How much time should I give the neighborhood?
Look, you can “check it off” in half a day, but to really feel the magic, sit in a café and wander through the galleries at your own pace, I highly recommend two to three days. You won’t regret it.
What’s the easiest way to get there?
The metro is easiest: line 4 (Saint-Germain-des-Prés or Odéon stations) brings you right into the heart of things. Line 10 stops here too. If you’d rather see the city through the window, bus lines 39, 63 and 96 will do the job.
Is it safe to walk around there?
Absolutely. Saint-Germain is one of the safest, most pleasant and most bourgeois areas in Paris, by day and by night.
Finding your way around
Want to really understand the soul of this place? Don’t settle for what meets the eye. The history of Saint-Germain is the key to everything. I highly recommend reading my article on the history of Saint-Germain-des-Prés before your visit. It will make the experience so much richer.
