It’s no secret that Paris is an expensive city when it comes to accommodation. Whenever the words “cheap hotels in Paris” come up, I automatically picture Old Goriot dying in his bare room, or Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) freezing in his. The truth is that while some cheap hotels in Paris will make you feel like a clochard, that isn’t always the case.
If you look carefully, you can find a cheap hotel in Paris that makes an excellent base for your days out, and you won’t dread coming back to it at the end of the day. Here are a few excellent hotels at prices that won’t break the bank.
- 📍 Location: as good and as central as possible.
- 🧼 Cleanliness and rating: a score of at least 7.5 on Booking.com.
- 🚿 Privacy: a private bathroom and shower in the room (we’re not at a youth hostel).
- 👍 Personal recommendation: priority to hotels that I, or Francophiles I trust, have tried.
A cheap but excellent hotel owned by a friend of mine
-

ATN Hôtel
A three-star hotel in a pretty good location not far from Gare Saint-Lazare, with an excellent breakfast. It belongs to a French friend of mine, which guarantees a warm welcome. To me, it’s one of the best value-for-money hotels around.
Cheap and good hotels in the Latin Quarter
Two really inexpensive hotels that belong to a French friend of mine. They aren’t in the most touristy spots, but they give you great value for the price.
-

Familia Hotel
A two-star hotel in the Latin Quarter, about half a kilometer from Notre-Dame and 3 minutes from the metro. Air-conditioned rooms and free Wi-Fi. Very close to the Jardin du Luxembourg.
-

Hotel de L’Esperance
A small, cheap family hotel near the lively Rue Mouffetard. Air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a lovely little courtyard for breakfast. Very clean, with friendly staff.
Cheap hotels in Saint-Germain-des-Prés
-

Hôtel Saint Pierre
A winning location! A quiet street near Boulevard Saint-Germain, close to Cluny metro station and the Jardin du Luxembourg. A basic hotel (“Spartan,” as a friend put it), but with a shower, toilet and TV in the room.
-

Hotel Michelet Odeon
A cheap and popular three-star hotel on Place de l’Odéon. A wonderful location near cafés and the Jardin du Luxembourg. Clean rooms that are fairly spacious for the category, with free Wi-Fi.
Cheap hotels near the Louvre and the Marais
-

Hotel Montpensier
An inexpensive hotel on Rue de Richelieu, 400 meters from the Louvre and close to the Palais-Royal. A big plus: it has an elevator! A great option if you want to be right in the middle of things.
-

Hôtel de Roubaix
A simple, inexpensive hotel near Rue Montorgueil and the Centre Pompidou. Friendly, pleasant service. My tip: skip the hotel breakfast and enjoy the excellent bakeries on the next street.
-

D’win
A very popular hotel in the heart of the Marais, about 5 minutes from the Hôtel de Ville. Modern rooms with air conditioning (very important in summer!) and a flat-screen TV. A perfect location.
-

Paris France
An elegant, pleasant hotel in the northern Marais. A great location near two metro stations and within walking distance of the sights. The welcome is warm and personal.
Another good-value option near République
-

Meslay Republique
I stayed here in 2019 and really enjoyed it. Right next to Place de la République and the northern Marais. A three-star hotel at a very reasonable price (it was still reasonable in 2022) in an excellent location.
Hostels in Paris
If you’re young (or young at heart) and don’t mind giving up a little privacy in exchange for serious savings, a hostel might be worth a try. I haven’t tried one myself, but you’ll find plenty of options at the link below.
