In short: how to choose a hotel in Paris
After more than 30 visits to Paris, I’ve gathered hotels that passed my personal filter, sorted by style, budget and arrondissement, so you can decide without wading through hundreds of options.
  • Price range: the hotels on this page run from about €90 a night in the budget category to about €465 for five stars. The core range for a four-star hotel in a good location is €180 to €250 a night.
  • Where to stay: on a first visit to Paris I recommend the 1st to 6th arrondissements. If you’ve been before, also consider the 7th, 8th, 12th and 14th.
  • When to book: the good hotels fill up months ahead. Most rooms come with free cancellation, so reserve early and cancel later if you need to.
  • Room size: a standard Parisian room is smaller than it looks in the listing. Families should secure a family room or connecting doors in advance, not assume they will sort it out on arrival.
  • How this page works: the top five first, then my personal picks, hotels by style (boutique, romantic, family, accessible), and finally a breakdown by all twenty arrondissements of Paris.
  • Hotels I stayed in: marked separately on the page. These are recommendations I stand behind from personal experience, not from a ranking.

Choosing a hotel in Paris is a bit like standing in front of the window of a fine pâtisserie: everything looks tempting, the photos are intoxicating, but deep down you’re afraid of ending up with a dry, day-old croissant.

I know that feeling well. After more than 30 visits to the City of Light, I have slept in luxury palaces, but also in a few “dives” you really, really don’t want to know about (yes, including that hotel with paper-thin walls and an elevator barely big enough for a baguette).

That’s exactly why I created this page. My goal is simple: to bring some order to the chaos and save you a headache.

Here I’ve gathered the hotels that give you the best value for money, sorted by style, budget and location. These are places that don’t just look good in photos, but places I have real experience with.

A small tip before you start:

The good hotels in Paris fill up months ahead, and most rooms on Booking.com come with free cancellation. Found a hotel you like? Reserve it now; you can always cancel at no cost.

If you’re short on time, check the top 5 hotels in the table below. For something more specific, just keep scrolling through my recommendations.

More styles of stay: find the hotel that suits you

Hotels in central Paris

Paris is a huge city, and if you want to feel its pulse the moment you step out of your hotel, it’s well worth choosing a central location. There’s no single “center” in Paris, but several recommended areas, such as around the Musée du Louvre, the Marais or Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

The big advantage of staying in these areas is the huge amount of time you save on public transportation, and quick access to the best attractions, restaurants and cafés. Below are 3 hotels I especially recommend for their location.

Boutique hotels

Regular readers already know that I will always prefer boutique hotels with character and unique design over big, soulless international chain hotels (even very luxurious ones).

Paris has a long tradition of small, charming boutique hotels that offer an intimate, personal and much more local stay. Here are 3 recommended boutique hotels that deliver that experience in full.

Romantic hotels

Paris is without a doubt one of the most romantic cities in the world, and a real couple’s getaway in the City of Light simply has to start with a hotel that puts you in the right mood at once. By the way, if you’re planning a trip for a special occasion, take a look at my detailed article on a honeymoon in Paris, which is full of tips. Here I picked great, good-value 4-star options, plus one 5-star hotel for those who want to go all out.

5-star hotels

If your budget permits, you can certainly find incredibly indulgent five-star luxury hotels in Paris. When the exchange rate is favorable, splurging a little on this once-in-a-lifetime experience may well be worth every euro.

In these hotels you get exceptional service, Michelin-starred restaurants, a luxury spa and design that will make you feel like real French aristocracy. Here are 3 of the most impressive palaces you can stay in.

Family hotels

If you’re traveling with the whole family (especially with teenagers who need their own space), my standard advice is to rent an apartment in Paris so everyone has room to breathe. But if you prefer the comfort of a hotel, and someone else making the beds in the morning, choose a family-friendly hotel with spacious rooms or connecting doors.

Here are a few examples of excellent hotels that will keep the kids happy (and you too):

Accessible hotels

Finding an accessible hotel in an old city like Paris can be quite a challenge (especially when the elevators in some buildings look like a cramped confessional). If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, make sure you choose a truly accessible hotel in a flat area.

By the way, I have a whole, detailed article on this important subject: Paris with reduced mobility: accessible attractions and tips for getting around. Here are 3 great hotels that are well suited to travelers with limited mobility:

It’s no secret that hotel prices in Paris have soared in recent years (especially with inflation and exchange-rate swings), but that doesn’t mean you can’t find great places to stay on a reasonable budget.

If you’re willing to be a bit flexible (for example, compromising on room size or skipping unnecessary frills), you can still find relatively cheap, clean and safe hotels that leave you a little more money for shopping and restaurants. Here are 3 good-value options:

Paris hotels FAQ

How much does a night in a Paris hotel cost?
The range in my recommendations runs from €90 a night at a budget hotel like Michelet Odeon to €465 at the five-star Bel Ami. A good three-star hotel usually costs €180 to €190, and a four-star hotel €200 to €250. Prices change all the time with supply and demand, and in a busy season or during a big event in the city they may be higher or lower than what is written here.
Which area should I book a hotel in?
Paris has no single center, but three areas I recommend: around the Louvre, the Marais and Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Their advantage is less time spent on transportation and walking distance to most attractions. Montparnasse and the Latin Quarter give better value for money with the same easy access.
Which Paris hotel do my readers love most?
Hotel 34B Astotel, rated 9.0, with prices from €185 a night. The reasons are the location, the price and the open bar with free snacks in the afternoon. It’s a three-star hotel, so don’t expect four-star pampering.
When should I book a hotel in Paris?
The good hotels in Paris fill up months ahead, so reserve as soon as your dates are set. Most rooms on Booking come with free cancellation, so booking early commits you to nothing and makes sure the hotel isn’t snapped up.
Which Paris hotel is convenient for Disneyland?
Inside Paris, the Novotel Les Halles is right by the train, with direct access to Disneyland and the airport, and the Holiday Inn Bastille is near the Gare de Lyon. If you prefer to sleep right next to the park, there are the Dream Castle and L’Elysée Val d’Europe.
Why are Paris hotel rooms so small?
Small rooms are typical of Parisian hotels, most of which sit in historic residential buildings that were never designed as hotels. If space matters to you, modern chain hotels like the Holiday Inn Bastille offer rooms that are large for the city.
What is the most romantic hotel in Paris?
Maison Souquet, for its mysterious atmosphere, private spa and design. Another luxury option is the Bel Ami in Saint-Germain, five stars from €465 a night. Both are choices for couples who want the hotel to be part of the experience and not just a place to sleep.
Boutique hotel or chain hotel in Paris?
I almost always prefer a boutique hotel, for the character, the design and the personal service. A chain hotel is better in two cases: when you need a big room for a family, and when being right by a train station matters more than atmosphere.
