Quite a few people heading to the City of Light ask other travelers to recommend centrally located hotels in Paris. And what do they get? A list of hotels scattered across all sorts of arrondissements, with nothing connecting them. The result? Confusion and quite a bit of frustration.
My goal is to solve this problem. I won’t just answer the question of whether there’s such a thing as “a centrally located hotel in Paris” (the answer is no), I’ll also help you find hotels in an excellent location and even recommend a few.
Since I know some of you don’t always have time to dig into the question and some of you just want the bottom line, let’s start with 3 hotels that, in my opinion, are simply in a wonderful location. Right after that, I promise to go into detail and explain.
🏆 The 3 winning hotels in a central location
Novotel Paris Les Halles
The most accessible and convenient: right in the beating heart of the city (the 1st arrondissement), above the main rail hub of Paris. Ideal for families and for anyone who wants to get everywhere fast.
Hôtel De Nice
The most romantic: a boutique hotel with stunning design in the heart of the Marais, on Rue de Rivoli. The perfect location if you love cafés, fashion and atmosphere.
Grand Hotel des Balcons
The best value: a modest hotel in an upscale location (Saint-Germain). It lets you sleep in the middle of everything, close to the gardens and the restaurants, without breaking the bank.
Is there such a thing as a centrally located hotel in Paris?
Why do people looking for a centrally located hotel in Paris have such a hard time finding one? The reason is simple. Paris isn’t a small town, it’s a metropolis, and as such it doesn’t have one center but a whole series of centers, some of them fairly far apart. Here are a few examples:
- The Île de la Cité and the Île Saint-Louis.
- The Louvre and Rue de Rivoli area.
- The Saint-Germain area.
- The Latin Quarter.
- The Marais, which is so big that it’s divided into two parts.
- The Champs-Élysées (an area quite a few visitors consider central).
So even if you stay at the very heart of it all, the Île de la Cité, you still won’t be able to walk to some of the other, no less important centers of Paris.
So I decided to take each of the areas I mentioned, add a few fairly central but lesser-known areas, find the most central spots in each one (places with lots of restaurants, close to the attractions, safe and so on) and recommend a few hotels there. So let’s get going and find you a hotel in an excellent location.
Hotels near Boulevard Saint-Germain (the Left Bank)
The spot where Boulevard Saint-Germain meets Boulevard Saint-Michel is one of the most central places in Paris. That’s because it’s close to attractions such as the Luxembourg Gardens, Notre-Dame Cathedral and so on, and because it’s one of the liveliest places in Paris, thanks to its restaurants and cafés. The following hotels make the most of this wonderful location.
-

Grand Hotel des Balcons
I started my recommendations with an inexpensive hotel, one that won’t necessarily suit many of the readers here who are looking for comfort and luxury (if you want something fancier, keep scrolling a little and you’ll find 4-star hotels and up). The reason is that it combines a great location with a very friendly price, which isn’t easy to find in this sought-after part of Paris.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
Its location is simply unbeatable: a quiet street, very close to Boulevard Saint-Germain and a 5-minute walk from the Luxembourg Gardens. It’s a great choice if you want central Paris at prices that make sense.- Location: in the heart of Saint-Germain, but also not far from the Latin Quarter. It’s very close to the Luxembourg Gardens and a short walk from Notre-Dame, Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Right Bank. In short, it’s a treat.
- Transportation: a short distance from Cluny-La Sorbonne station and from Odéon metro, served by lines 4 and 10. Saint-Michel station is also within walking distance, and from there you can get to the Palace of Versailles, the Eiffel Tower, Charles de Gaulle Airport and more.
- Food: quite a few of the Latin Quarter’s restaurants and nightspots are a short distance away. It’s also a short walk to Chez Georges, a small and charming wine bar.
- Atmosphere: the hotel is in a central, lively area, but it’s a convenient and safe base. This is one of the liveliest student areas in Paris.

Recommended hotels on Rue de Rivoli and in the Marais
When people talk about the center, I immediately think of the eastern part of Rue de Rivoli. The Seine is a few minutes’ walk away, and from there it’s a short hop to the Île de la Cité and the Left Bank. Famous Paris neighborhoods like the Marais and major attractions like the Louvre Museum or the Centre Pompidou are also a 10-minute walk away.
-

Hôtel De Nice
Without a doubt, one of the most originally designed hotels I’ve ever stayed in. Beyond the beauty and the attentive service, it has one of the best locations in Paris.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
The hotel is in a very lively area. That’s a plus for safety, but it can be noisy. Even with the soundproof windows, to be on the safe side, I’d recommend asking for a room on one of the top floors, which are quieter.- Location: on Rue de Rivoli, one of the main streets in Paris. It’s right next to the Marais and a short walk from the Louvre, Notre-Dame and the Left Bank.
- Transportation: very close to Hôtel de Ville station, served by lines 1 and 11. Line 1 is a key line that can easily take you to the Champs-Élysées or La Défense.
- Food: there are quite a few restaurants of every possible kind very close to the hotel, and there’s also an excellent ice cream shop right behind it.
- Shopping: Rue de Rivoli has plenty of shops, and the Marais itself has less touristy boutiques. The big BHV department store is a very short walk away.

Paris France Hotel
I have a soft spot for the northern Marais, because this is where my love affair with Paris began all over again. It’s a long-established, much-loved hotel that offers excellent value for money.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
The real winner when it comes to getting around is how close it is to République metro, served by lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11, which can take you to many places in Paris quickly and easily.- Location: right next to the northern part of the Marais and a few minutes’ walk from the Canal Saint-Martin, with all its bars and cafés.
- Food: the hotel is a very short walk from the Marché des Enfants Rouges. There are plenty of excellent food shops and restaurants around the market.
- Atmosphere: the northern Marais is completely safe. Keep in mind that some less pleasant characters can hang around the République area in the evening.

Hotels in Les Halles, the belly of Paris
The area of the former wholesale market (Les Halles) is, in my eyes, one of the most central and most recommended places to stay. You’ll find endless food spots here (food shops and restaurants), plus a metro and suburban train station that will help you get to interesting places.
-

Novotel Paris Les Halles
This is one of the most popular hotels with my readers, thanks to its excellent location. There are several very good reasons for that.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
This is one of the best areas for foodies, thanks to Rue Montorgueil with its many restaurants and food shops. If you love to cook, the streets around Rue Montmartre have quite a few famous kitchenware shops.- Location: the hotel is right in the beating heart of Paris, within walking distance of the Louvre, the Centre Pompidou, the Marais and the Seine.
- Transportation: very close to Les Halles station, which you can reach directly by train from Charles de Gaulle Airport. This is also where the RER A runs, which will take you to Disneyland Paris.
- Shopping: right next to you is the Les Halles shopping center, one of the biggest malls in Paris.

Hotels near Notre-Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame Cathedral sits in the very heart of Paris, on the Île de la Cité. You won’t find hotels on the Île de la Cité itself, but if you cross the bridge south toward the Latin Quarter, you’ll find several recommended hotels nearby.
-

Europe Saint Severin-Paris Notre Dame
A very pleasant 3-star hotel that quite a few people have recommended to me. The rooms are small (as in a great many Paris hotels), but the location, ladies and gentlemen, the location…
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
Keep in mind: this area (Rue de la Huchette) is packed with restaurants, but most of them are mediocre tourist traps. For really good restaurants, walk a little toward Boulevard Saint-Germain.- Location: very close to Notre-Dame and the Latin Quarter. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a short walk away.
- Transportation: the hotel is very close to Saint-Michel Notre-Dame station, served by line 4, the RER B (to the airport) and the RER C (to Versailles).
- Atmosphere: a bustling, very touristy area. Great if you like to stay in the middle of all the action.

Hotels near the Opéra Garnier
The Opéra area is considered one of the most central areas in Paris, and for good reason. It borders the 2nd and 1st arrondissements with all their attractions, and it’s close to the famous department stores. That’s why it became one of the most popular areas with visitors back in the 1980s. Even though the Marais and Saint-Germain have overtaken it in popularity in recent decades, it’s still a perfectly good area to stay in.
-

Daunou Opéra
The Daunou Opéra really is close to the Opéra, and that gives it several advantages in terms of location.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
If you love Japanese food, you’ll especially enjoy the choice of restaurants on Rue Sainte-Anne, not far from the hotel. For an upscale atmosphere at night, head to nearby Place Vendôme.- Location: the hotel is in the 2nd arrondissement, right on the border with the 9th. That means you can easily get to the Opéra and the department stores or explore the 1st arrondissement.
- Transportation: the hotel is not far from three metro stations: Opéra, Quatre-Septembre and Pyramides. That gives you lines 3, 7, 8 and 14.
- Shopping: from here it’s easy to get to the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps (highly recommended, especially at Christmastime).

Hotels near the Eiffel Tower
Quite a few people insist on staying near the Eiffel Tower. I’ve never understood why it matters so much, since you can see it from just about everywhere anyway. But the customer is always right, so here’s a recommendation that’s really close to it.
-

Hôtel Eiffel Turenne
This is a solid hotel with excellent reviews on Booking.com, and it lets you get to the tower quickly and easily.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
Foodies will love the hotel’s location near Rue Cler, one of the most important food streets in Paris. And if you like Art Nouveau architecture, a lovely surprise awaits you in the area.- Location: the hotel is near the Eiffel Tower, and you can walk from it to Les Invalides, the Musée Rodin or the Seine.
- Transportation: the hotel is very close to École Militaire metro station. On the other hand, only one line stops there (line 8).
- Atmosphere: the 7th arrondissement is an upscale and very safe area. It’s quiet, and the atmosphere is pleasant.

Hotels on the Champs-Élysées
Following what I wrote about people who insist on staying near the Eiffel Tower, allow me to say the same about people who insist on staying near the Champs-Élysées. But if you really want to stay there, here’s a perfectly good option.
-

Hôtel Galileo Champs Elysées
This is a pleasant, friendly 3-star hotel with good reviews on Booking.com, very close to the Champs-Élysées.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
The western end of the Champs-Élysées (near the Arc de Triomphe) is lively during the day, but in the evening some less pleasant characters sometimes show up. Keep that in mind.- Location: the hotel is a short walk from the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe. From here it’s easy to get to the lovely Parc Monceau.
- Transportation: the hotel is close to the Arc de Triomphe and to Charles de Gaulle-Étoile station, served by lines 1, 2 and 6. That makes it easy to get to all sorts of places in Paris.
If you’d like to treat yourself, here are more options around the Champs-Élysées:

Hotels near the Louvre Museum
I saved my favorite area for almost last. This is the western part of Rue de Rivoli, close to the Louvre Museum, Place Vendôme, the Tuileries Garden and more. Let’s start with a hotel that isn’t cheap, but one I really love and highly recommend.
-

Hôtel Brighton – Esprit de France
Here we move up to the league of expensive, indulgent Paris hotels, and I decided to start with the Brighton. The reason is that I stayed there in 1999 and I’ve missed it ever since. When you see the location, you’ll understand why…
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
If you’re lucky and get a room facing the gardens, you’ll be able to see them from your window. That’s a huge plus. And if you’ve never been to the Angelina tea room, which is very close by, you really owe yourself a visit.- Location: across from the enchanting Tuileries Garden and very close to the Jeu de Paume, the Musée de l’Orangerie and, of course, the Louvre.
- Transportation: the hotel is right next to Tuileries station, served by line 1. Place de la Concorde is within walking distance.
- Shopping: on one hand, the area has the touristy junk Rue de Rivoli is full of. On the other hand, nearby Place Vendôme has endless high-fashion boutiques.

Hotels in Montparnasse: a bonus for seasoned travelers
At first glance, Montparnasse (the 14th arrondissement), in the southern part of Paris, isn’t considered a central area. That isn’t really true, though, because the part that borders the 6th arrondissement lets you walk to the Luxembourg Gardens and super-central Saint-Germain in about 15 minutes. That’s why “seasoned Francophiles” like me prefer to stay in this arrondissement.
-

Hôtel Aiglon
I stayed at this hotel in September 2021 and enjoyed not only the excellent service and the tasty breakfast, but also one of the best locations in Paris (in my opinion).
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
True, the hotel is next to the Montparnasse Cemetery, but hey, your neighbors will be especially quiet :-). Joking aside, the cafés and restaurants on nearby Rue de la Gaîté will give you a warm, authentic Parisian atmosphere.- Location: the hotel is in the beating heart of Montparnasse, near quite a few legendary restaurants and cafés (like Le Dôme and Le Select).
- Transportation: the hotel is a few seconds’ walk from Raspail metro, from where you can easily get to the Île de la Cité and the Right Bank (line 4) or the Eiffel Tower (line 6).

Hotels in the 12th arrondissement: a bonus for seasoned travelers
Prices in the 12th arrondissement are lower than in the central arrondissements, but if you stay near the Gare de Lyon or Place de la Bastille, you can get to the center of Paris quickly and easily. It’s a great choice if you want to save money without compromising on access.
-

Holiday Inn Paris – Gare de Lyon Bastille
I stayed at this hotel in October 2025 and highly recommend it. Its location is particularly strategic and gives you the best of all worlds.
💡 The Francophile’s tip:
The advantages here are huge: it’s within walking distance of the Bastille (and from there the Marais), and a short walk from the Gare de Lyon, with a direct train to Disneyland (RER A) and the metro to the center (lines 1 and 14). The icing on the cake? It’s within walking distance of the Marché d’Aligre, my favorite food market in Paris.

FAQ: hotels in central Paris
Right before you confirm your booking, I’ve gathered a few questions I get again and again from readers, with honest answers (and, between us, the most practical ones out there).
Which area is best for first-time visitors to Paris?
If it’s your first time and you want to feel that famous “magic”, I’d recommend the 6th arrondissement (Saint-Germain) or the 4th arrondissement (the Marais). These areas combine historic beauty, wonderful cafés and walking distance to most of the main attractions.
Where should I stay in Paris with kids?
For families, convenience is king. That’s why I highly recommend Les Halles (the 1st arrondissement) or the Gare de Lyon (the 12th arrondissement). The reason? Perfect transportation links (a direct RER train to Disneyland Paris and to the airport) and parks and supermarkets nearby.
Is it safe to stay in central Paris?
Overall, yes, Paris is very safe. That said, as I mentioned in the article, some areas, like Châtelet (late at night) or the area around the Gare du Nord, are less pleasant. The areas I’ve recommended here (Saint-Germain, the Marais, the 7th arrondissement) are considered safe and pleasant in the evening too.
