Introduction, or how to find hotels in Paris
Hotels in Paris can make a vacation great or ruin it entirely, and therefore it is extremely important to find a good hotel that would suit both your needs and your budget. But how to do that? After all, Paris has so many hotels, and recommendations websites, such as TripAdvisor, are not always credible. The best way is to simple talk to reliable Francophile friends, who have visited Paris several times, and managed to find a lovely hotel they can recommend. The problem is that not anyone has that kind of friends, and even if you do get a recommendation for a hotel or two, what happens if those hotels are fully booked on your dates in Paris? To solve this problem I created this page, where you can enjoy both worlds. On the one hand, you can get hotel recommendations in Paris from me and other Francophiles, and on the other hand, there will be enough recommendations on this page to find an available recommended hotel, even if those you liked most are already booked. You can search this page in two ways. The first is looking at the Paris hotel map, and once you’ve located your desired hotel, click on the link in its description. Another option, if you know approximately in what area you would like to stay, is simply to scroll down to the relevant Arrondissement, and once you see a hotel that interests you, click on its name to get to a page containing all relevant information about it. Before we start, there are three remarks I would like to make:
- Full disclosure: every hotel has three links for information and bookings from the websites Hotels Combined, Booking.com, Expedia and Travelor. The reason for those three links is that sometimes the price of a specific hotel, even for the same dates, slightly differs between various websites, and therefore you can compare prices, and book your hotel on the site that gives you the best price. Either way, if you book your hotel through the links on my website, I’ll receive a small fee from the website. Any income I’ll receive from this will be put back into the website, and if I can make enough money, I promise to quit my current career, move to Paris, and dedicate 100% of my time to Anonymous Francophiles.
- Quality of recommendations: I’m making my best efforts to only include recommendations for really good hotels in my website. However, it’s important to remember that every recommendation is good for its own time, and sometimes a hotel that got wonderful recommendations a few years ago has deteriorated in quality, and currently doesn’t deserve the positive reviews it got. In this case, I sincerely ask you to write me an email ([email protected]), and I promise to delete this hotel from the recommendations page asap.
- I’ll repeat the last remark time and again: this is a dynamic page, which is updated every several days with information I receive from the Francophiles community. Therefore, even if you haven’t found what you were looking for, you can come back a few days later, and it is very possible that you’ll find new recommendation you may be able to put into good use. Also, if you’ve been to a hotel and had a good stay there, I would be very glad to hear from you and add it to my list (you can add your comments below or send me an email to [email protected]).

Personally, I really like the 1st Arrondissement, both because I used to stay there in my childhood visits to Paris, and because of its centrality, and its proximity to attractions such as the Louvre or the Tuileries gardens, as well as the Seine – allowing you to quickly get to the left bank.

The 2nd Arrondissement is a slightly less touristy quarter, and contains areas that might be considered a little boring (such as Bourse area). On the other hand, the proximity of parts of it to the culinary Rue Montorgueil make the 2nd Arrondissement a pretty good option.

The 3rd Arrondissement, which constitutes the northern and western part of the Marais is a wonderful place to stay, because of the palaces from the 17th and 18th centuries, the cafes, the boutiques, and the art galleries. If you happened to choose to stay in its western part (for example, in the Austin’s Arts Et Metiers hotel), you’re lucky to be in the vicinity of both the Marais and Rue Montorgueil, Centre Pompidou, and Rue de Rivoli. Four for the price of one!

The 4th Arrondissement includes the southern part of the Marais and the charming Île Saint-Louis. In my opinion, this is one of the best areas to stay in Paris, not only because of its architecture and the proximity to the lovely Place des Vosges, but also to Place de la Bastille, around which there are quite a few wonderful restaurants and entertainment options.

The 5th Arrondissement, also known as the Latin Quarter, is one of the most popular places to stay in Paris. It combines quite a bit of history (the Sorbonne, the Pantheon, and more), along with proximity to Rue Mouffetard, one of the most famous culinary streets in Paris, which makes this area a pretty good option.

The 6th Arrondissement, which includes Luxembourg Garden and the charming streets surrounding Boulevard Saint Germain is a popular competitor of the Latin quarter (and the prices are accordingly). What makes it so popular is the combination of geographic centrality (within 10 minutes you can cross the Seine and reach the right bank), and a large selection of restaurants and cafes (including Le Procope, the oldest café in Paris). If you want to live right where the action is, this is the place for you.

The 7th Arrondissement is one of the most luxurious quarters of Paris, and as such, it is very fancy and safe. It contains quite a bit of hotels that are not very cheap, but worth their price.

The 8th Arrondissement is quite famous among tourists for the Champs-Élysées. Personally, I don’t like staying here very much, because the entire area is highly touristy, and at night you can find some people of the not-so-nice type there. However, the areas of the 8th Arrondissement located in the vicinity of Parc Monceau are very nice, and those close to the 1st Arrondissement are relatively central, so they may be worth checking. Much like the 7th Arrondissement, this quarter is also considered luxurious, and therefore the hotels here would most likely be more expensive than in other areas.

I think that the 9th Arrondissement has the most hotels in Paris, and in the pre-internet era every travel agency would send its clients there. When you search for hotels in this quarter, it is best to find such that are located as close as you can to the Opera (many use the Opera’s name in vain, while located quite a bit of distance from it). Another option is to find a place close to the Grands Boulevards, which ensures proximity to many restaurants, cafes, and action. The third option is to find a place to stay close to the Montmartre. While it isn’t an especially central location, its proximity to the culinary Rue des Martyrs will provide you with a nice, vibrant environment of restaurants, food shops, and cafes.

The 10th Arrondissement is a reasonable area to live in, but no more than that. If you stay close to the République, you’ll have good access to quite a few metro lines, which would lead you to various places in Paris, as well as to Canal Saint Martin and Oberkampf area, where the Parisians themselves like to hang out.

This Arrondissement, which is located not far from the Bastille, is considered a bit far from the centre, and therefore the prices are a little cheaper there. I recommend staying as close as possible to the Bastille, where there are many restaurants and entertainment options, or east of Boulevard Beaumarchais, so that you can easily hop to the Marais.

This area is somewhat less touristy, and a bit farther from the centre. If you’ve already decided to stay there, I recommend looking for hotels that are close to the south-eastern side of the Bastille or to Marché d’Aligre, one of my favourite culinary markets.

The 13th Arrondissement is one of the most boring quarters of Paris, and is mostly considered a residential area. If you’ve decided to stay there anyway, try finding a place as close as you can to Avenue des Gobelins, from which you can easily reach the Latin quarter. Another option is to stay close to Place d’Italie, where several metro lines are located, which makes it easy to get to many places in Paris.

Montparnasse was the area most favoured by the French bohemians in the 1920s and 1930s, and since then many people like to stay there (the best example is the Israeli singer Benny Amdursky, who always stayed at the Delambre hotel). Personally, I would recommend staying close to Boulevard du Montparnasse, in order to enjoy the restaurants and cafes, or as close as you can to the 6th Arrondissement, to be in the vicinity of Luxembourg Garden.

Most of this Arrondissement is comprised of housing complexes built for the middle class. It is far from the centre, and therefore, in my opinion, it isn’t very recommended (even though every second hotel will try to argue for close proximity to the Eiffel Tower). If you’ve decided to stay there after all, try to live close to Marché Grenelle, where you can find some great breakfasts.

This Arrondissement is luxurious on the one hand, and quite boring and far away from the centre on the other hand. Not exactly my cup of tea. However, during the last couple years my opinion about this arrodissement changed a bit as I have visited avenue Mozart with its plethora of food shops and restaurants. Therefore, if you wold like to stay in there I would recommend staying around that avenue or near the Arc de Triomph.

This Arrondissement is mostly not a touristy area, and quite far from the centre. If you’ve decided to stay there after all, try to stay as close as possible to the lovely Parc Monceau or to the Arc de Triomphe, from which you can easily reach the centre of Paris.

While I like visiting the Montmartre, I don’t really love the 18th Arrondissement. It has quite a few immigrants and unsympathetic areas, such as Barbès-Rochechouart, from which I’d recommend you to simply avoid. If you still want to stay in this quarter, I would recommend staying close to Rue Lepic, so that you can enjoy the food shops and the restaurants in the area.

I’ll keep it straight and simple – I don’t recommend staying in this area. The distance from the centre, combined with a large number of immigrants, turn this area into a very non-sympathetic quarter for tourists, in my opinion. Go there only if you can’t afford booking a hotel in a normal area.

Personally, I think of the 20th Arrondissement as “Paris for veterans”. At one point I stayed close to the Alexandre Dumas metro station, and I had a great time. On the other hand, it is completely not touristy (except for Père Lachaise cemetery), and far away from the centre. I only recommend staying there if you want to experience a different sort of Paris, or if you found an extremely cheap deal.
