Until the early 2000s, most of the visitors in Paris were staying in hotels. However, as the internet became more and more advanced, came into our lives the vacation apartments, or vacation rentals, which provided a cheap and spacious option for staying in the City of Lights. Add to that the magical sensation of feeling like a true Parisian for a few days, as well as the ability to cook (or at least heat in the toaster-oven) the best delicacies the French cuisine offers, right in your apartment, and you have a winning accommodation solution. Therefore, it is not surprising that when I wrote the article about visiting Paris on a budget, I recommended vacation apartments as the cheapest and more pleasant alternative to a hotel.

Many croissants were eaten in Paris since then, and things started to change, and not necessarily for the better. The demand for apartments made companies like Airbnb raise the prices and add various and strange commissions. At the same time, the competitions caused the hotels to lower their prices, and as a result, today the price difference between a small apartment and a hotel room has grown smaller. In addition, people started realizing what the other side of the coin was when it came to staying in a vacation apartment, including being dependent on the apartment owner to receive the key (I’ve heard several stories of apartment owners who never showed up or forgot to leave the key, and the pour tourist had to look for a hotel at 3am…), and the need to clean the apartment daily (because there is no room service). Does it mean that you have to give up the idea of an apartment and rent a hotel room instead?< Not necessarily. In order to decide if it is suitable for you to rent an apartment or a hotel, all you have to do is ask yourselves two questions:

  • How many people will you be? If you’re a couple or a single person, it’s not at all certain that you should take an apartment, because the price difference between an apartment and a hotel is not so high. On the other hand, if you’re a family of three or more, an apartment with several bedrooms (or a bedroom and a living room with a convertible sofa) is an excellent option, because it would cost you much less than renting several rooms at a hotel.
  • What is your pace going to be during your vacation? If this is your first time in Paris, and you intend running around the City of Lights all day long, chasing attractions, I would warmly recommend taking a hotel room, since you won’t be there too much anyway. However, if you’re already veteran Francophiles, and want to take your time and enjoy the city, an apartment in Paris is the right option for you. Such an apartment will allow you to wake up in the morning, go down to the neighborhood market, get yourselves a fresh baguette, cheese, fish, meat, and any other delicacy that comes to mind, and celebrate the beginning of the day with a glorious breakfast. The apartment will also be a good place to go back to during the day, in order to rest a little, and enjoy the tons of presents you bought for yourselves while touring the City of Lights.

How to find a good vacation apartment in Paris?

Now, once you’ve decided that a vacation apartment is indeed your favorite option, all that is left to do is find it. A long while ago, I used to find vacation apartments through mouth-to-ear recommendations, and you can read about some of them in the page about accommodation in Paris. Later on I tried finding apartments using Airbnb. In the beginning it worked out pretty well, however, with the success comes the appetite, and they started raising the prices and fees, and in the end I couldn’t find there any good apartments for a reasonable price. Then I discovered Booking.com. “Wait,” you probably ask, “isn’t this a website for hotel searching?” The truth is that until a few years ago, that was my thought exactly, but when I searched a hotel there in the city Le Mans, I discovered a charming apartment for an excellent price, and realized that they provide vacation apartments too, and not only hotels.

On Booking.com you can find two types of apartments:

  • An apartment hotel: This is a complex that contains two apartments or more, which is managed by a single person or company. In some of the cases this is an actual hotel, which provides you hotel services (reception, daily cleaning services, etc.), and so it allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. Frequently, such apartments will cost more than “standard” vacation apartments.
  • Vacation apartments: These are apartments owned by private people, which can be rented via the website, and enjoy the abundance of benefits offered by Booking.com to their users (for example: 10% discount on a large part of the hotels and apartment for returning clients).

Since Booking.com contains over a thousand apartments in Paris alone, I decided to help you and locate the best apartments in each Arrondissement. When I picked those apartments for you, I relied on two main criteria:

  • Apartment rating by the website’s users: I decided not to advertise apartments whose average rating is lower than 8.0, and with less than 10 recommendation (to avoid rating bias by the apartment owners).
  • Location: I’ve only chosen apartments in excellent locations, meaning ones that are close to metro stations and/or to food stores and markets.

One last thing before you start browsing the apartments and find the one most suitable for you: if you happened to stay in one of those apartments and you didn’t like it, please contact me by email, [email protected], and I will immediately remove it from this page.

Good luck on your search, and have a wonderful vacation!

You’re welcome to browse the various vacation apartments on the map (each apartment contains a link leading to a more detailed page and allows you to book the apartment directly). Alternatively, you can scroll down and read the recommendations on each and every one of the apartments in this page.

The 1st Arrondissement is a very central quarter thanks to its proximity to so many tourist attractions. If you decide to take an apartment there, I recommend taking one that is located close to the Seine (which makes it easier to go from the right bank to the left bank), or Les Halles area, in order to benefit from the food stores in Rue Montorgueil, which can provide you with breakfast feasts fit for kings.

This quarter is less touristy than the 1st Arrondissement, and some would call it slightly boring. However, it is still quite a good option for accommodation thanks to its central location. I highly recommend staying close to rue Montorgueil for the culinary aspect, or by the Grands Boulevards for their central location and proximity to quite a few metro stations.

The 3rd Arrondissement, located in the north and the west of the Marais, is a great place to stay, thanks to the 17th and 18th century palaces, the cafes, the boutiques and the art galleries. If you wish to stay close to a wonderful food market, try staying in the northern part of this quarter, close to Rue de Bretagne, but if you’re seeking the proximity of cafes and some action, try looking a bit more to the south, close to Rue des Francs Bourgeois.

The 4th Arrondissement includes the southern part of the Marais neighbourhood, as well as Île de la Cité and the charming Île Saint Louis. In my opinion, this is one of the best areas to stay in Paris, not only for its centrality, its architecture, and its proximity to the lovely <a2>Place des Vosges</a2>, but also for its proximity to Place de la Bastille, an area surrounded with great restaurants and entertainment options. Also, If you decide to stay in the western part of this Arrondissement, you will be fairly close to the Les Halles area, with its own abundance of culinary options, which makes it a great selection as well.

The 5th Arrondissement, also called the Latin Quarter, is one of the most popular places to stay in Paris. A combination of quite a bit of history (the Sorbonne, the Pantheon, and more) and the proximity to Rue Mouffetard, one of the most famous culinary streets in Paris, Marche Monge and many more, make this area a very good option for people who wish to rent an apartment.

Recommended apartments in the 6th Arrondissement

The 6th Arrondissement, including the Luxembourg gardens and the charming streets around Boulevard Saint Germain competes in its popularity with the Latin Quarter (and the apartments in the area are priced accordingly). The thing that makes it so popular is the combination of geographical centrality (you can cross the Seine within minutes, and get to the right bank), and a large selection of restaurants and cafés (including Le Procope, the oldest café in Paris). If you want to live right in the middle of the action, this is the place for you. If you decide to rent your apartment in this area, I highly recommend taking a stroll in Rue de Buci and buy the great food offered there and get your bread at Boulangerie Poilâne. This is promised to be a culinary success.

The 7th Arrondissement is considered to be one of the most luxurious quarters in Paris, as well as one of the safest. Whoever stays there gains proximity to the Eiffel Tower, the Invalides palace, and of course – Rodin museum. However, these are not all of the advantages this quarter has to offer. First of all, it is considered the safest quarter in Paris, as many government bureaus and embassies are located there. Additionally, this quarter has a lot to offer on the culinary aspect, as you can see on my restaurant page, and if you wish to buy food to eat in your apartment, don’t miss a visit in Rue Cler, with its grand selection of food stores (you can read more about it on <a3>Julia Child’s tour route</a3>).

The 8th Arrondissement is quite famous among tourists mainly for the Champs-Élysées. Personally, I don’t like staying here very much, because the entire area is very touristy, and at night you can find some people of the not-so-nice type there. However, the areas of the 8th Arrondissement located in the vicinity of Parc Monceau are very nice, and those close to the 1st Arrondissement are relatively central, so they may be worth checking. For religious Jews, this is a great area to rent an apartment, for its proximity to the Chabad house, where you can eat your Sabbath meals.

The 9th Arrondissement is considered one of the most touristy quarters. If you decide to stay in this area, it is best to find a place by the Opera and the Grands Boulevards, for their central location, or close to Rue des Martyres for the food stores in the area, which can turn your meals in the apartment into a culinary experience.

Here we go a bit farther from the centre, and for that reason, this Arrondissement and the following ones are mostly recommended for advanced Francophiles. If you decide to stay here, I recommend finding a place in the area of Canal Saint Martin and its vibrant nightlife. Alternatively, you should find a place by the République, for the proximity to the Marais and the metro station, which is an important intersection of lines that can lead you to many places in the city. However, the area of Gare du Nord is less recommended, because of the nature of its population (although a few metres to the south there are some very nice streets, so this is just a basic “rule of thumb”, and not a clear guideline.

This quarter, located close to the Bastille, is considered a little far from the centre, and is therefore a little cheaper. You should try and stay by Marche d’Aligre, for the wonderful food that you can buy there. Alternatively, the area of Rue de Charonne and Rue de la Roquette is also recommended, as it is close to many restaurants and cafés. A last option, which is mainly good for young (and young at spirit) people, is the area of Rue Oberkampf, which offers a great selection of bars and entertainment places that stay open until the late hours of the night (and in this case, I obviously recommend to stay on the side streets so that the noise doesn’t disturb you).

This area is less touristy and a little farther away from the centre. If you decide to live in this area, I recommend looking for apartments close to the south-eastern side of the Bastille, or by Marche d’Aligre that is located in this area, close to the 11th Arrondissement. Another good option for advanced Francophiles is to stay in a vacation apartment by Place de la Nation, a place where many metro lines meet.

This is definitely a quarter for veterans, because it barely contains any tourist attractions. On the other hand, this usually manifests in relatively comfortable prices, which is a wonderful advantage. If you decide to stay in this area, I would recommend finding a place by Place d’Italie, where there are many metro lines, or by the charming, village-like neighborhood Buttes Aux Cailles.

The 14th Arrondissement is a very large quarter, and mostly not touristy, which manifests in relatively low prices. If you decide to stay there, I highly recommend the area of Boulevard du Montparnasse, as well as the areas close to the 6th Arrondissement and Luxembourg gardens.

In my opinion, this is the least touristy quarter in Paris, where many families of the Parisian middle-high class reside. If you decide to stay there, try living in the vicinity of <a>Marche de Grenelle</a>, and that way you can fix yourselves great breakfasts, or by the Eiffel Tower, to feel a little bit like real tourists. Another option is to stay by the Montparnasse train station, which allows you easy access to the various restaurant of Boulevard du Montparnasse and the area.

This Arrondissement is very luxurious, but large parts of it are fairly boring and distant from the centre (except for selected few, such as the southern part of the Champs Elysees, the Trocadero and the area of Passy, which is very close to the Eiffel Tower). In general, this is not exactly my cup of tea. However, my opinion of this Arrondissement has begun to change when I was staying with a couple of friends of mine who live there, and discovered Rue Mozart, and its abundant selection of food store and good restaurants. So this area is clearly not such a bad option for advanced Francophiles who want to get to know new and beautiful areas of Paris, and are willing to stay a little far from the centre.

This quarter is mostly non-touristy and somewhat far from the centre. If you still wish to stay there, try to be as close as you can to the charming Parc Monceau and to the Arc de Triomphe, from which you can easily reach the centre of Paris. Also, don’t miss Rue de Lévis and Rue Poncelet, and the wonderful variety of food selections on those streets, which can provide you with great meals to eat at the convenience of your apartment.

Perhaps inspired by Charles Aznavour’s song “La Bohème”, many people wish to stay at the Montmartre like Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and others before them. The truth is that this is not a bad idea at all, because those who stay on the hill can definitely enjoy the slightly village-like area, and from the wonderful food stores on Rue Lepic and Rue des Abbesses. One word of advice, though: the east part of the 18th Arrondissement includes a neighborhood called La Goutte d’Or (the golden drop). Despite this wonderfully-sounding name, you won’t find any gold there. However, you will find quite a lot of immigrants of somewhat questionable nature, and so it would be best to stay away from there.

This arrondissement is quite distant from the centre, but for those who don’t fear it, this area also offers several advantages. First of all, the hotel prices are cheaper, but beyond that, the are two of the most beautiful parks in Paris (Parc des Buttes-Chaumont and Parc de La Villette), which are fun to live by. Those areas offer lovely cafes and a great view, as well as proximity to Basin de La Villette, and the children’s museum and science museum in the western part of Parc de La Villette. Within walking distance from that area, you’ll find good metro connections in stations Stalingrad and Jaures, which connect you almost to the entire city. You’ll soon find out that Paris centre is not as distant as you first thought…

Personally, I think of the 20th Arrondissement as “Paris for veterans”. At one point I stayed close to the Alexandre Dumas metro station, and I had a great time. On the other hand, it is completely not touristy (except for Père Lachaise cemetery), and far away from the centre. I only recommend staying there if you want to experience a different sort of Paris, or if you found an extremely cheap deal.
